PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis)
If you have been exposed to HIV from high-risk behaviour or broken condoms, PEP is also available at this surgery. Just speak to your doctor and they will arrange it for you.
Any PEP intervention must begin within 72 hours of exposure.
What is PrEP?
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. PrEp is a HIV prevention method in which people who do not have HIV take medication daily to reduce their risk of contracting HIV. The pill contains two antiviral medicines.
Who should be taking PrEP?
PrEP is recommended for people who are at high risk of acquiring HIV through sexual activity.
Increased Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) surveillance. People who choose to go onto PrEP must have a negative HIV test prior to obtaining medication. It has been shown that people who had been converting when commencing PrEP had a higher risk of developing drug resistance. Once commencing PrEP you must agree to have a complete sexual health check every three months as it has been shown that the incidence of Syphilis, Gonorrhoea, and Chlamydia is greatly increased with condomless
